The counter follows X's weighted rules for URLs, emoji and Unicode instead of relying on ordinary string length.
How X counts characters
A standard X post allows up to 280 weighted characters, but different kinds of content do not always use the allowance in the same way.
Links
Every valid URL counts as 23 weighted characters, whether it is short or contains a long path and query string.
Emoji and Unicode
Emoji, CJK characters and some other Unicode ranges count as two. Joined emoji still count as one emoji.
Mentions and hashtags
Manually entered mentions, hashtags and cashtags count normally, including their leading symbol.
What happens when you continue
The tool deliberately stops at preparing one standard text post so its result remains predictable and private.
